Description
Few signed pieces can generate the type of interest like a specimen featuring the signature of Babe Ruth. A single-signed item is even more rare among memorabilia. ‘The Great Bambino’ hand signed the sweetspot of this vintage baseball in black fountain pen ink in 1935. The signature is large and strong. There are no marks or scratches on the signature and each letter is clearly legible. The baseball, with black and red stitching, was manufactured by Phillip Goldsmith and Sons, Inc. Cincinnati, OH (credited with making the first handmade baseballs in 1875). The horse hide leather cover has light toning, consistent with its age. Additionally, we can determine this ball is from 1935 as it bears a stamping of the Boston Braves team logo. By this time in his career, Ruth knew he had little left as a player. His heart was set on managing the Yankees, and he made no secret of his desire to replace Joe McCarthy. However, Jacob Ruppert would not consider replacing McCarthy. In 1935, the Yankees traded Ruth to the Braves and it was announced that in addition to remaining a player, Ruth would be made assistant manager to Braves skipper Bill McKechnie. Ruth would retire only a few months later and the following year, 1936, he was named as one of the first five players elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The signature has been authenticated by PSA/DNA (#K74901) and comes with a full Letter of Authenticity. This ball may be the finest piece of baseball history and game memorabilia currently available, but we expect that one fan or collector will add this to their cache of collectibles very soon.
