Rookie pitcher Fernando Valenzuela pitched a shutout on opening day and would go on to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award and the NL Cy Young Award. In his first eight starts, he went 8-0 with eight complete games, five shutouts, a 0.50 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. He remains the only rookie to ever win a Cy Young Award. In the Postseason, he went 3-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 40.2 innings pitched including a complete game victory in game 3 of the World Series.
