Born in 1880, Helen Keller was an author, political activist, and
lecturer who became deaf and blind at 19 months old, possibly from
scarlet fever or meningitis. Interestingly, Helen Keller’s doctor
referred her to Alexander Graham Bell, who was working with deaf
children at the time. Bell advised the Keller’s to contact the
Perkins Institute for the Blind. The school’s director asked
20-year-old former student Anne Sullivan, to become Keller’s
instructor. What started as a testing relationship grew into Keller
understanding more than 60 home signs to communicate with her
family. This was the beginning of a 49-year-long relationship. The
story of how Anne Sullivan was able to break through the despair and
isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language, allowing her
to grow and thrive as she learned to communicate, has become known
throughout the world as the play and film “The Miracle Worker.”
Considered to be a prolific and outspoken author and activist,
Keller truly did not let the world stop her. She became the first
deaf and blind individual to earn a bachelors of arts degree.
Keller wrote a total of 12 published books. She also campaigned for
women’s suffrage and labor rights, among other causes.
